Helping you recover
Bariatric surgery is just the first step in your weight loss journey. After surgery, it’s important to focus on recovery and healthy lifestyle changes. These efforts can help support your weight loss and long term success.
At Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton, our bariatric surgical team is dedicated to your success. We can provide you with guidance to maximize the benefits of your surgery.
Most people spend one night at the hospital after surgery. Different surgeries, such as gastric bypass or gastric sleeves, may have different recovery times.
A lot of factors affect when you can return to work. These include the physical demands of your job and how well you’re eating and drinking.
On average, it could be two to six weeks before you can return to work and other activities. We ask that you refrain from heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for four weeks after surgery.
Yes! Our team can provide you with resources and guidance to make healthy eating choices no matter where you are eating.
We offer two support groups that meet monthly at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton. One support group is for people both before and after surgery. The other is only for people who have had bariatric surgery.
These groups are a place for you to talk with others who have had, or plan to have, bariatric surgery. You can discuss the process and any questions or challenges you are facing. Our team also has resources for recipes, online support and education to help you throughout your weight loss journey.
At a minimum, we require you to follow up with us for five years. Ideally, you would follow up for life. Regular follow up allows us to see how you are responding to surgery and that you are staying healthy.
Alcohol is not recommended after weight loss surgery. Alcohol has a lot of calories, which can make weight loss harder. Alcohol use after bariatric surgery also can lead to addiction issues.
