Is Bariatric Surgery Right for You?

Making the Right Choice with Bariatric Surgery

Bariatric surgery can help with weight loss. It also can improve your health. Research shows that bariatric surgery can:

  • Promote weight loss.
  • Improve or resolve medical conditions caused by obesity (including high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea).
  • Improve quality of life.
  • Reduce the risk of death.

Knowing if bariatric surgery is right for you, however, can be challenging. At Beth Israel Deaconess–Milton, we can help you decide if or when bariatric surgery is right for you.

Qualifying for Bariatric Weight Loss Surgery

You must meet certain requirements to have bariatric surgery. The main requirement is body mass index (BMI), which measures the amount of fat on your body compared to your height and weight. People usually qualify if they are between 18 and 70 years old, have a BMI over 35 and have certain other health conditions. These conditions include high blood pressure, diabetes or sleep apnea.

If you are over 70 years old, there may be additional risks to bariatric surgery. We’ll work with you to determine if surgery is right for you.

Choosing the Right Procedure

We offer several different bariatric procedures. Check out the types of procedures for more information.

We believe it’s important for you to have a say in which procedure you undergo. We’ll provide you with information on each option available to you, including the risks and benefits.

Consider Pre-Surgery Counseling

You may want to consider working with a counselor before surgery to help you understand your eating patterns and your relationship with food. The counselor can help you develop new coping strategies and behaviors to manage food in a healthy way before and after surgery.
