Everyday Exceptional Gala Supports Community Care with Generous Gifts

Milton, MA – On Saturday, April 11, Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton (BID Milton) marked a major milestone with its most successful gala to date, highlighted by the announcement of two gifts from the Copeland Family Foundation totaling $2 million to support the expansion and renovation of the hospital’s Emergency Department (ED).

More than 400 generous supporters, hospital leaders, and dedicated staff gathered at the John F. Kennedy Library and Museum for the Everyday Exceptional Gala, emceed by Milton community member and former WCVB broadcaster Bob Halloran. The event raised $700,000 in support of the Everyday Exceptional Campaign, BID Milton’s first capital campaign in more than a decade, focused on meeting the region’s growing healthcare needs now and into the future. The evening also recognized Michael J. Brady, CFA, former chair of the Board of Trustees, with the Charles C. Winchester Award and honored the legacy of the late Michael V. Berry, MD, former chief of orthopedics.

“Our Milton community continues to raise the bar for what philanthropy can achieve at every level,” said Rich Fernandez, president, BID Milton. “We’re grateful for the collective generosity behind this campaign and for the Copeland Family Foundation’s leadership in advancing high-quality, patient-centered care close to home.”

The Copeland Family Foundation’s gifts will be recognized through the naming of the new Emergency Department. The renovation and expansion will nearly double the number of emergency beds and increase on site parking capacity. Originally built to serve approximately 26,000 patients annually, the Milton Emergency Department now cares for nearly 42,000 patients each year—a number that continues to grow.

“The new Emergency Department will create a welcoming environment that reflects the quality of care we provide,” said Dan Nadworny, DNP, RN, director of emergency and critical care, BID Milton. “We’re seeing more and more patients choosing BID Milton as their first point of care because they want high quality treatment close to home—and this expansion will allow us to meet that demand.”

The initial phase of the campaign, completed in 2024, supported significant upgrades to inpatient spaces across the hospital, as well as the completion of the Mark T. Hodgman, MD, Cardiology Testing Suite, and the John Mahoney, MD, Neurology Testing Suite, improving the patient experience and access to timely, high-quality diagnostic and clinical testing.

“The gala was a celebration of the people who make BID Milton exceptional—our staff, leadership, and generous donors,” said Jeff Marr, Board of Trustees member and chair of the Philanthropy Committee. “The depth of support for this hospital speaks volumes about how much it means to this community.”

BID Milton’s expanded Emergency Department is set to open during the summer of 2026.
