Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton Celebrates Groundbreaking Emergency Department Expansion
New ED Will Increase Capacity To Address Growing Community Needs
Milton, MA – Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital–Milton (BID Milton) has celebrated the groundbreaking for expansion of the hospital’s emergency department (ED). This project will nearly double the number of beds in the ED, providing additional capacity to meet the needs of the community.
“We are thrilled to break ground on this important project that will increase access to emergency care closer to home for our neighbors in Milton, Quincy, Randolph, and surrounding communities,” said Rich Fernandez, president of BID Milton. “Our ED has continued to see increases in volume in recent years and this permanent expansion will allow us to address our patients’ health needs now and in the future. Our new emergency department will provide seamless, high-quality care, right in the community.”
The hospital’s ED was originally built to serve 26,000 patients a year and currently serves about 42,000 patients a year. Closures of nearby health care facilities have impacted an increase in volume to the ED.
The expansion will also add additional observation spaces. Observation spaces, which are intended to evaluate, treat and monitor patients who require shorter stays in the hospital, will make available more beds within BID Milton for patients who need a more critical level of care. The overall project will provide modernized space and technology, creating a more welcoming space for both patients and staff.
BID Milton leadership, hospital supporters and community members celebrated this project milestone at a groundbreaking ceremony on March 11. At the ceremony, BID Milton also marked the completion of phase one of a recent philanthropic campaign to upgrade key hospital spaces including patient rooms, nursing stations, hallways, family rooms, medication rooms and staff areas.
“We are grateful for the support of the community as this project has developed,” said Anthony Cichello, chair, Board of Trustees. “BID Milton is an extraordinary community asset, providing world-class care right in our backyard. This is an exciting day as we both break ground on this project and celebrate the completion of other important modernization projects at the hospital.”
“The unwavering commitment from our donors underscores the importance of this project,” added Fernandez. “This investment is vital to our community, our patients, and our extraordinary staff.”
The expansion is scheduled to be complete in 2026.
Philanthropic support from the community has been instrumental in transforming BID Milton’s care environments as part of the Everyday Exceptional campaign. More than 400 donors supported the first phase of the effort with their generous contributions. As the hospital looks ahead to phase two, philanthropy will be key to realizing the hospital’s vision for the new Emergency Department.
While BID Milton works to expand the ED, the ED will remain open, but patients also continue to have access to Beth Israel Lahey Health Urgent Care – Quincy, conveniently located nearby. The urgent care center offers a wide range of treatments for non-life-threatening conditions.
