BID Milton Opens Expanded Emergency Department

Expanded Emergency Department Nearly Doubles Capacity and Private Care Spaces

Milton, MA — Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton (BID Milton) this week opened its newly expanded Emergency Department. The expanded and renovated Emergency Department nearly doubles the number of beds, providing more private treatment spaces.

“We are so pleased to open the expanded Emergency Department, providing an enhanced experience for patients and their families,” said Rich Fernandez, president, BID Milton. “The facility will allow us to care for more patients, strengthen clinical workflows, and provide an environment that better reflects the high-quality care delivered by our teams.

The hospital’s Emergency Department was originally designed to care for 26,000 patients annually. Today, 42,000 patients are seen each year — a testament to the growing needs of the community. Key enhancements include:

• Nearly double the number of emergency department beds, including more private treatment space
• Additional observation spaces to support patient care and throughput
• Modernized clinical space and technology that enhances the care experience
• More than 80 new parking spaces to improve access and convenience for patients, visitors, and staff

“The updated Emergency Department will be a welcoming space for our patients who entrust us with their care,” said Jonathan Anderson, MD, chief of Emergency Department, BID Milton. “Advancing care in the community is central to BID Milton’s mission and supports Beth Israel Lahey Health’s goal of delivering 70 percent of care in the community.”

The Emergency Department expansion is the result of support from many generous donors, including the Copeland Family Foundation, whose two leadership gifts totaling $2 million will be recognized through the naming of the Emergency Department.

This milestone coincides with the conclusion of the Everyday Exceptional fundraising campaign, which would not have been possible without the extraordinary generosity of the hospital’s donors and community supporters. The campaign raised more than $13 million against its $8 million goal and enabled the complete renovation of the hospital's inpatient spaces, as well as the expansion of the Emergency Department.
