Mammography (Three Dimensional)

3D Mammo3Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton offers state-of-the-art 3-D (three-dimensional) mammography, sometimes called “tomosynthesis,” in a warm, compassionate and convenient community hospital setting.

Unlike traditional two dimensional mammography, which takes images of the breasts from only two angles, 3-D mammography takes images from multiple  angles and creates a three-dimensional view of the breasts. This greatly aids radiologists reviewing the results in finding suspicious areas or lesions needing further investigation, particularly in women with dense breast tissue.

Numerous clinical studies have shown that 3-D mammography can increase the early detection of breast cancer by up to 40% while reducing the number of false positive readings and the need for follow-up “call back” mammograms by 20%.

Mammography plays a central part in early detection of breast cancer because it can show changes in a breast up to two years before they can be felt.

Current cancer screening guidelines recommend that women ages 40 – 44 should talk to their doctor and choose when to start their annual screening mammogram program. Women ages 45 -54 should have annual screening mammograms and women ages 55 and older should continue annual mammograms or have one every two years. Women who have had breast cancer or who are at an increased risk due to genetic or family history should talk to their doctor about when to start screening mammograms and frequency of exams.

At Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton, all mammogram results are reviewed and interpreted by highly experienced radiologists at the hospital who are members of Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The hospital’s Mammography Program is also accredited by the American College of Radiology for meeting all nationally established quality-of-care standards.
