Heidi O’Connor, MD, a board-certified critical care, pulmonary and sleep medicine specialist, has been appointed Medical Director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and Chief of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Milton (BID-Milton).

As Medical Director of the ICU, Dr. O’Connor, along with other critical care specialist physicians, will work closely with primary care physicians, cardiologists and surgeons in caring for critically ill or injured patients. She will also lead the ICU’s multidisciplinary care team of nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, social workers and other professionals, as well as direct daily rounding on patients to develop and monitor care plans.

In addition to providing care in the ICU, Dr. O’Connor will also evaluate and treat pulmonary and sleep disorder patients on an outpatient basis in the hospital’s Center for Specialty Care.

“We are delighted Dr. O’Connor has joined BID-Milton’s Medical Staff,” said Ashley Yeats, MD, chief medical officer and vice president of healthcare quality at the hospital. “Employing a critical care specialist-led team approach to care will enable us to integrate best practice care into our ICU and enhance the coordination of patient care with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center for those critically ill patients who may need the advanced resources of a leading academic medical center.”

According to Dr. Yeats, studies have shown that ICUs staffed by critical care specialists have better patient outcomes. Last year, fewer than half of U.S. hospitals’ ICUs were staffed by critical care specialists.

Dr. O’Connor is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts Medical School. She completed her medical residency training at Tufts New England Medical Center, and a pulmonary critical care fellowship at Tufts Medical Center.
